  • What does Authentic Biliteracy Development mean to you?

For me, it means tying in language education with culture and identity. I think it's important for students to have an understanding of who they are rather than losing their identity through the gain of another language. It's important to allow students to share their stories and experiences with their peers to make them feel like they're understood and accepted. #DualLanguageRocks

I have noticed this with some of my own students; they tend to supplement their own identity through a culture and heritage with the acquisition of a new language. As Americans, especially now, it is imperative that while learning a new language we remind students how important it is to hold onto the culture they identify. Personally, I do this through class restive writing asignments and discussions about tradition so within their own family. A little can go a long way!
