5.1 Pedagogical Decisions

OVERVIEW:

There are many pedagogical decisions that need to be made early on, including determining the dual language program model, instructional minutes for each language, and instructional materials available in the target language.

  • Determine the Program Model
    • 90:10 program model

According to research, the 90:10 model supports high academic achievement in both languages as well as high levels of biliteracy for all students. Literacy development is sequential –first in the target language and then in English for all students.

    • 50:50 program model

According to research, the 50:50 model supports high academic achievement in both languages for all students. Literacy in both languages is developed simultaneously for all students.

  • Determine the Instructional Minutes by Language and Subject Across Grade Levels
    • When calculating instructional minutes, be sure to count all contact in English toward the percentage of the day/week in English (e.g., English Language Development [ELD], physical education, library, computers, etc.).
    • Attaining the exact percentage for each language on a daily basis can be challenging, especially if there is an early-release/minimum day each week.
      • It is recommended that the language percentage be calculated on a weekly basis.
  • Survey the Availability of Instructional Materials in the Target Language in Classrooms and School Library/Instructional Media Center
    • Core instructional materials (language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, etc.) for the classrooms
      • Which core materials will need to be in the target language will be determined by:
        • Program model (percentage of time in the target language)
        • Grade level (in the 90:10 model, more core instruction is done in the target language at the primary level)
      • Classroom library materials in the target language:
        • Supplemental/research materials corresponding to the content being taught in the target language at each grade level
        • Authentic literature for voluntary/pleasure reading by grade level
      • School library materials in the target language:
        • Supplemental/research materials corresponding to the content being taught in the target language at each grade level
        • Authentic literature for voluntary/pleasure reading by grade level
