At DualLanguageSchools.org, we honor teachers monthly who have made a huge difference in the Dual Language community. We reach out to parents, administrators, fellow teachers, to nominate stand-out members of their community who make a difference in the lives of aspiring Bilingual citizens.

Paula Rios is no exception to this, she is someone who exemplifies the characteristics that we need in a Dual Language teacher. We were recommended to Paula because of her phenomenal teaching ability, as told by the parents of the students' whom she inspires. Paula is someone who goes above and beyond to ensure that all of her students meet their goals; by taking extra time to send weekly report cards to parents while maintaining constant communication with parents, demonstrates an exceptional knowledgeable and understanding of the benefits of dual immersion programs, via her implementation within her classroom strategies. This is why we are honored to have Paula Rios as our December Teacher of the Month.

Vanessa works to incorporate the arts into her classroom.

How long have you been involved in education?

I have always been involved in Education. I began working as a tutor in high school and throughout my college years. As a student teacher, I was exposed to different grade levels. I worked for a Tutoring Company making sure students received extra help. I have now been at Laton Elementary for over 3 years teaching third grade students.

My favorite part of being a teacher is that I get to make a difference in students' lives on a daily. They will take these skills and incorporate them in their adult lives.

What was your biggest influence in becoming an educator?

As an elementary student, I had amazing teachers. As an EL student the extra time spent really made a difference in whom I have become.

How did you arrive at Laton Elementary?

In 2005, I completed my final student teaching in Laton. I was amazed by the program and I never forgot about the experience I had there. Once I was ready to begin teaching I reached out to the principal about openings for the following school year. She told me there was an immediate opening for third grade. I was then hired to teach third grade and I have been in the same class for 4 years since May 2015.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

My favorite part of being a teacher is that I get to make a difference in students' lives on a daily. They will take these skills and incorporate them in their adult lives.
