Widewater Elementary School Dual Language Immersion Program
Widewater Elementary School Dual Language Immersion Program
Description
Dual Language Immersion is a unique program in which our students learn in both English and Spanish. They learn the same literacy, math, science, and social studies standards as other students at their grade level but are taught in English and Spanish. DLI students in grades K-2 learn Spanish Language Arts and Math in Spanish and English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies in English. Our DLI students also take the same required state tests as all other students.
Dual Language Immersion programs benefit all students, including increased cognitive functioning, cultural awareness, and improved test performance. DLI Programs are effective at helping English Language Learners be successful in school, including learning English. They also give opportunities for all students to become bilingual and bi-literate. At Widewater Elementary School, our program is English and Spanish, with students spending half their day learning each language.
Stafford County Public Schools will continue implementing our Dual Language Immersion program at Widewater Elementary School during the 2024-2025 school year. This program will expand each year, adding the next grade level until the program is in grades K-5 in the 2027-2028 school year.Â
