We are very excited to announce the May dual language teacher of the month: Zhaoting Xia! She is a kindergarten teacher at Corporal Michael Middlebrook Elementary School in Lafayette, Louisiana. The dual language program at CMM is a one-way immersion program, with Mandarin Chinese as a target language.
Ms. Xia comes from China, where she completed her university studies. After completing her studies, she held teaching jobs in Mongolia and Thailand, where she also taught Mandarin Chinese.
Her desire to try new challenges brought her to the United States. She is participating in a program sponsored through a collaboration between the Institute of International Education and Hanban. The IIE is an organization that works with corporations, established businesses, law firms, research institutes, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited educational institutions, and similar types of institutions to sponsor individuals, who conduct research, lecture, observe, or consult in programs lasting from 3 weeks to 5 years. The Hanban is a non-governmental institution and the executive organ of the International Council of Chinese Language, affiliated with the Ministry of Education. It is the representation of the diffusion of the language and the culture of China and it provides the services and didactic resources necessary for its teaching, contributing to the multicultural development through the union among universities.
Ms. Xia has been a teacher for 6 years and credits her career choice to her high school math teacher, whom she says was very kind and patient and treated all students with dignity, respect, and concern. She saw how this teacher engaged all learners, encouraging all to do their best and helping them along the way. She inspired many and never gave up on her students. Ms. Xia witnessed first-hand the power that an involved and giving teacher can make on a student’s school career, which in turn, has an impact on their lives. The experience she had with her teacher made her realize that she too, wanted to touch the lives of young students by providing a positive influence on their educational career.
Parents witness the positive influence she has on her students, evidenced by statements such as this one by Brooke Daigle, who nominated her for this award,
"Xia is a very dedicated and hard-working teacher. She taught my daughter and now is teaching my son. She is always kind and has a mother's touch with the students. She is thoughtful, open, and considerate; and in my opinion has the perfect personality for working with kids. My children love their Chinese Immersion classes. I feel blessed to have her as my son's teacher, and because she has given my children such a good experience."
